Another Perspective on Possibility (versus Probability)

My most recent newsletter that explored the nuances between possibility and positive thinking, prompted a wave of fantastic responses. I really appreciate you sharing your insights. Your thoughts on my ideas and perspectives are truly valued, and deepen my understanding of the topic to be even more nuanced.

There is another related concept that I find even more intriguing: the delicate dance between possibility and probability.

Consider the scenario where a health diagnosis carries a daunting 90% probability of an unfavourable outcome. Yet, within that formidable 90%, there exists a 10% possibility – a glimmer of hope, a chance to defy the odds – of a desired future. In other words, the odds might be against you, but the inherent potential for a different outcome exists. It’s about shifting from the likely outcome to a better one. And let me be clear: this isn’t about ignoring that the probability numbers aren’t great; it’s about saying, I’ll do everything I can to be in the 10%.

I’ve had personal experience with this. Over a decade ago, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, and accompanying that diagnosis were discouraging probability statistics for my future. At that time, the odds were not in my favour – and the weight of such statistics was overwhelming – but rather than letting the numbers dictate my destiny, I chose to focus on what’s possible.

This choice was not about denying the reality of the situation, but rather a commitment to harness any possibilities that could shift my reality. Instead of succumbing to the weight of statistical probabilities, I leaned into my belief in the potential for a different narrative. The essence of this mindset shift lies in recognizing that while probability provides a glimpse into the likely outcomes, it does not eliminate the existence of alternative paths.

Possibility urges us to explore beyond the confines of statistical certainties.

To be clear, this was not just about mindset for me. It required effort and actual action – and a lot of it. I tapped into every combination of what western medicine could offer (although frankly there was very little available to me here), countless alternative medicine options, and a whole slew of complementary treatments.

And while there are no guarantees where this will end up, I do know I am far, far better off today than I would have been otherwise. By shifting my focus from the probable to the possible, I unlocked an opportunity to rewrite my story against the odds.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about these concepts.
